Game Boy Makes the Big Time

Nintendo's handheld takes a seat in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

If you didn't know there was a National Toy Hall of Fame, you should now: Nintendo's Game Boy handheld has been inducted for 2009.

The National Toy Hall of Fame, according to the website, was established in 1998 to recognize toys that have inspired creative play, and has enjoyed popularity over a sustained period. The hall inducts products each year based on nominations supplied by any consumer but chosen on the advice of historians, educators, and other individuals. It is run by the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

This year, the Nintendo Game Boy joins the likes of the Big Wheel, and the ball. It beat out toys such as Cabbage Patch Kids, Game of Life, Hot Wheels, Paper Airplane, Playing Cards, Rubik's Cube, Sidewalk Chalk, Toy Tea Set, and Transformers. Sorry guys, maybe next year.
