Mario Targets Million

Twenty year old title likely to become fourth Game Boy Advance million seller in Japan.

Super Mario Brothers is about to enter yet another exclusive club: the Game Boy Advance platinum club. Dengeki Online reports that, as of 10/30, the game has shipped 968,000 units to Japanese retail and is still selling upwards of 10,000 copies per week. The title, re-released on September 13th to commemorate Mario's 20th anniversary, was number thirteen in this week's sales charts out of Media Create, down from last week's number nine position.

While GBA is the biggest active portable system in Japan right now (DS still has a ways to go before catching up), the Japanese have made just three games into platinum titles, and all three begin with Pokemon. Pokemon Saphire/Ruby leads the pack with 5.08 million total sales as of 9/23. Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green follows at 2.55 million, with Pokemon Emerald taking third at 1.612 million.
