Exclusive Interview
with Milla Jovovich

Actress Milla Jovovich stars in Resident Evil: Extinction, the latest movie based on Capcom's best-selling Resident Evil video game franchise. Extinction marks the third, and reportedly last, installment. This film boasts the largest budget of the trilogy and takes the story in a new and very different direction. Jovovich took some time to talk about her video game/film trilogy and some of her own gaming habits in this exclusive interview.

What games did you used to play growing up?

I played Super Mario Bros. when I was little. Resident Evil was something that my brother loved to play when he was younger. I'd sit and play with him so he wasn't by himself and so that we could sit and bond over the game. I ended up getting really addicted as we played together.

Resident Evil was the first mass market survival horror game franchise. What did you like about playing the games?

We played Resident Evil 3. I really loved it because there were lots of different places to go and weapons to use and solve puzzles. I liked the aspect that I could play with him. It wasn't like a fighting game that you just beat each other up. You had to think about what you were doing and plan things out as you explored this world. It was a great way to have fun together.

Did you feel like the game's cinematic style would translate to the big screen back when you were playing this game?

Definitely. I remember that's why I contacted my agency and asked if there was a script for this because I thought this would be a really good movie and if so I'd love to be involved in making it.

Resident Evil: Extinction was one of the most difficult shoots I've ever had. We were really up against the elements.

Did you go back to play the games at all after you got the role of Alice?

Not really.

What did you do as preparation for the character of Alice?

I did a lot of physical training and a of weapons training. I tried to really become the kind of soldier that she is. I got on that schedule and spent a lot of time disciplining myself. She was working in Umbrella's security department in the first movie. I put myself on a schedule like a soldier would have.

How has Alice evolved over these three films?

I think Alice has evolved so much. She had no memory in the first film. She was innocent. She learns more about herself in each movie and what Umbrella has done to her. In this film she really tries so hard to protect the people she loves because she's really scared that her new powers can hurt them. She goes off by herself to isolate herself and protect the people she loves. In a way, in the first movie she was selfishly working for Umbrella and in this movie, in a sense, she's sacrificing herself for her friends.
