Exclusive Interview
with Masi Oka

What do you play when you want to relax?

When I'm at home I play close-ended stuff like Madden NFL 08 and I just finished Heavenly Sword. I got back into console games again when I was in Japan, but I haven't played a PC game in a long time. Sometimes I wish I could really stop time and just dive into a game of Final Fantasy and beat it and then come back and not miss any work.

What do you think about the fact that there's already a "Heroes" mobile game out?

I think that's great. I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds fun. I personally would like to see a "Heroes" MMO/RPG. I think the show could lend itself to that and create a Second Life-type universe that would allow fans to connect. The message in "Heroes" is about connecting people so an online game would be perfect for that. Hopefully, they'll go for a virtual community. I pitched a mobile game to them a while back but it got rejected.

Ubisoft is working on a "Heroes" console, game as well.

I'd be tempted to find out what the story line will be for the game and how they're going to do it.

What do you think of the fact that after one year you have a mobile game and now a console game in development?

It's pretty cool. Any time you get immortalized in a digital world is pretty cool. I always thought it was weird that the football players want to play as themselves in Madden. So now I'll get to play as myself in the "Heroes" game, which will be kind of surreal. You play games to be someone else. In this case, I'm playing me being someone else.

Are you interested in getting involved in making games yourself, since you have that programming background?

Absolutely, I love games. I just don't have the time right now. Eventually, I'd like to develop videogames and also create comic books. I'm actually involved in a charity called One Laptop Per Child. Hopefully, I can write a game and ship it with these laptops to children in third world countries.

Do you think the transition from special effects to game development would be smooth?

I've lost my touch. I'd need about a month to get back into programming. Programming is therapeutic for me. Since it takes time to do all of this programming, it would nice to partner with a design team and create a game. That would be so much fun to do.
