Exclusive Interview
with Albert Pujols

It's not often that an athlete gets the opportunity to grace the cover of two very different baseball video games in the same year, but that's exactly what 2006 World Series Champion Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals has done. First, he was chosen as cover athlete for the youth-oriented Backyard Baseball 2007 by Humongous Games. The three-time Silver Slugger Award-winner also graces the cover of 2K Sports' new arcade take on baseball, The Bigs, which celebrates the larger-than life, heroic aspects of America's favorite pastime.

Pujols, a six-time All-Star and 2006 Golden Glove winner, had the chance to play The Bigs for the first time at his fifth annual Albert Pujols Charity Golf Classic at Missouri Bluffs Golf Club. The slugger spent some quality time playing the Xbox 360 version on an HD TV and spoke exclusively to Yahoo! about baseball and video games.

What do you think about the arcade take that The Bigs takes with baseball?

I think 2K Sports did an awesome job creating game. It looks unbelievable. I got a chance to play for about a half hour with my son, AJ, and he loves it. You know if he loves it, the kids are going to love it. I think 2K put a lot of time and effort into this and it shows. I've been blessed to have played in some monumental baseball games in my career and it's amazing to see how The Bigs captures the most dramatic plays and brings them to life.

Do you have any favorite features in The Bigs?

I love everything in the game. The Home Run Derby mode is a lot of fun. I was able to hit balls into the scoreboard and watch it explode. One feature I really like in The Bigs is the Times Square Pinball mode. The ability to hit balls at taxis and neon signs is really creative. It blew my mind.

What do you think about the Nintendo Wii version of The Bigs, which allows players to physically emulate throwing a pitch and swinging a bat?

The Wii game sounds pretty interesting. I didn't get a chance to play that but I would love to try it out. With the Xbox 360 version, you already feel like you're in the game. So the ability to actually pitch and hit in the game takes it even further. The technology right now allows game makers to really bring players into the sport of baseball.

What's it like to see yourself in a videogame?

I'm happy with the way I look in the game. As long as the game comes out and people like it, I'm happy. I've been able to get a lot of feedback today from people who have been playing The Bigs and they love it. My son and my teammates all got a chance to play and everyone's happy with it.

What's it like to be on the cover of not one, but two videogames?

It's an honor to be on the covers. They could choose anyone out there. There are so many great players in the league and for them to choose me is just a great honor. I'm excited for my son because he loves seeing me on the cover.
